DENVER, Colo. (KDVR) — Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed a bill into law on Wednesday that will add $30 million in rental assistance to the state’s existing program.
The bill, which was passed by the state legislature earlier this month, will provide funding for rental assistance for low-income residents who are struggling to make their rent payments. The funding will also be used to help prevent evictions and provide financial assistance to renters who have been evicted.
“This is a critical step to help ensure that Coloradans have a safe and stable place to call home,” Polis said in a statement. “This funding will provide much-needed relief to families who are struggling to make ends meet and prevent evictions that could lead to homelessness.”
The additional funding for rental assistance is part of a larger effort by the Polis administration to address the state’s affordable housing crisis. The administration has also invested in the construction of affordable housing units and created a new program to help first-time homebuyers.
Looking ahead to tight 2024 elections
The 2024 election cycle is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in Colorado history. Both the governor’s race and the U.S. Senate race are expected to be close races, and the state’s congressional delegation could also see some changes.
The Democratic Party is looking to maintain its control of the state government, but the Republican Party is hoping to make gains. The 2022 midterm elections were a mixed bag for the two parties, with the Democrats winning the governor’s race but the Republicans winning control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The 2024 elections could have a significant impact on the future of Colorado. The governor’s race will determine who sets the agenda for the state, and the U.S. Senate race will determine who represents Colorado in the nation’s capital.
Trump ballot case to be heard by Colorado high court
The Colorado Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on Wednesday in a case that could decide whether former President Donald Trump can appear on the state’s Republican primary ballot in 2024.
A lower court ruled in October that Trump cannot appear on the ballot because he is not a registered Republican in Colorado. Trump’s attorneys have appealed the ruling to the state Supreme Court.
The case is being closely watched by both Republicans and Democrats. If the Supreme Court rules in Trump’s favor, it could give him a boost in his quest to win the Republican nomination for president in 2024. However, if the Supreme Court upholds the lower court’s ruling, it could be a major setback for Trump’s political ambitions.
